There is a bill currently in the North Dakota Senate that would force priests to violate the seal of confession or face criminal fines and even jail time.
SB 2180 would force priests and other members of the clergy to reveal what is said during confession and spiritual counseling in cases of suspected child abuse or vulnerable adult abuse. This is a violation of our right to freedom of religion, including the right to go to confession or get spiritual counseling without the government invading our privacy and religious rights.
The seal of confession is inviolable, and can never be violated for any reason. All persons, of all faiths, should have this minimum expectation in the practice of their religion.
Please contact your district senator and tell him/her to "Vote No on SB 2180."
Click the buttons below to find contact information on your senator.
Our Senator here in Devils Lake and the surrounding area is Dave Oehlke.
If you live South of the Lake (such as Ft. Totten or St. Michael) your Senator is Joan Heckaman.
If you live further away, please consult the district map to determine your district and senator.

This pandemic has been hard on us all. But we at St. Joseph's are still holding Sunday Mass, running our office, providing classes and other services to our parishioners, and educating our children. As such our expenses remain the same as they always have.
But with lighter Mass attendance our weekly collections have gone down. If you are able to make a donation, even if you cannot come to Mass, we would greatly appreciate it. That way, St. Joseph's can continue to serve the needs of our people.
Thus, we introduce two new ways for you to donate to St. Joseph's Catholic Church: Our Credit Card Kiosk in the Mother Theresa Hall and our Online Giving Page. The credit card kiosk is a two-step touch screen.

Due to higher cases of COVID-19 in our town and area, the City of Devils Lake and the State of North Dakota is requiring that masks be worn in public places.
In compliance with this statement from our state and city, we at St. Joseph's are requesting that everyone wear a mask to Mass and other parish activities. Let us all take appropriate precautions to prevent the spread of this virus.
Fr. Wilhelm
Dear St. Joseph's Parishioners:
We know that this is a difficult time. With an increased number of COVID cases in our community and surrounding area, we understand if you do not feel safe coming to Sunday Mass. And we are still under dispensation from our Bishop.
However, St. Joseph's will continue to provide our ministries during this time. We are still working, still paying our staff, and still have our regular expenses and bills to pay. In order to maintain our budget we need to take in about $15,000 a week in contributions. Our average lately has been only $11,500 a week.
We ask you to consider maintaining your contributions to our parish even if you are unable to come to Mass. Contributions can be mailed to P.O. Box 898, Devils Lake, ND 58301; they can be dropped off in our Parish Center during business hours in the specially marked box; or given electronically through your bank.
We are exploring additional options for donations, including a credit card kiosk in the Mother Theresa Hall and an online giving form her on our website.
Please keep your eye out for these options coming in the near future.
Thank you to everyone who keeps us in mind and expresses their love of God and Church even in the midst of this difficult time.
For all the men of our parish who missed out on out Into the Breach video series or wish to view it again, here the videos to the series.
This series is directed at Adult Men, urging them to embrace wholeheartedly masculine virtutes in a world in crisis.
St. Joseph's Catholic Church in North Dakota is reopening for private prayer and for public Mass, including our regular Sunday Mass schedule. However, we are taking several precautions, following the guidelines of both our Governor and our Bishop, to reduce the risk of spreading the still dangerous Coronavirus.
Some of these guidelines have been relaxed, but we are still encourage maintaining 6-foot social distancing and using various sanitizing practices. We will continue to offer Facebook Live-Streamed Masses for our 9 A.M. Mass on Sundays.
Also, please note that Bishop Folda has extended the dispensation for the Sunday obligation. You are not at this time obligated to come to Sunday Mass. If you are sick or around someone who is sick, we ask you not to come for your sake and for the sake of the others attending Mass. If you are elderly, particularly vulnerable to illness, or live/work with someone elderly or vulnerable, consider remaining home.
For the complete set of our guidelines in a pdf printable document please click the buttons on the right.
Click the button on the right to read a letter from our Bishop John T. Folda. Bishop Folda is allowing for the public celebration of Mass starting Monday, May 4th. This is being done under strict guidelines. Please read Bishop Folda's message.
